This is in a series of works that I am currently studying around aged and ancient natural materials. A Witness Tree is not only used as a fixed reference point in surveying to help identify a boundary or significant location, it is an ancient tree that has borne witness to generations of human activity and changes in the landscape. This is the largest vessel of this type that I’ve made before and took shape from a study of tree trunks and different bark in nearby woods, merging different elements from different specimens - a knot from one tree, lichen from another, a type of bark from another etc. All glazes are mixed from scratch and each piece has its own individual shape. No two pieces are alike and each piece takes several weeks from start to finish to achieve the build up of age and texture.
