Vernal Cocoon
In the theme of Spring, birth and new life I wanted to work on a cocoon shape. This is the first one I’ve made this shape and it has a welcoming essence. It was fired during the equinox together with a giant egg so it has extra authenticity as a spring born piece. I have put some foraged wood in the aperture in the photos to suggest that it is hanging from a branch but it could easily be replaced. I may go and look for a much bigger branch for greater impact. This ceramic vessel is watertight and therefore could be used as a vase or equally as a very unusual water vessel if you have the strength to pick it up once full of water! It is a mixture of thrown and hand built porcelain with multiple slips and glazes added to build up texture and depth. I have deliberately stretched the shape for a more organic wabi sabi form.
Dimensions 40cm high x 17cm diameter
